A great question - and one that has many layers to its answer.
Since you've asked, it sounds like you're new to IM (Internet Marketing). That being the case, you should probably start as an affiliate marketer and learn as you go.
First thing you'll want to do is make a list of possible areas to promote. Trickier than it sounds, as you should... 1. at least have an interest in the subject (you'll be spending a fair amount of time with it) 2. make sure their is room for you in the space you choose 3. also make sure it isn't too competitive (or you'll get dicouraged and give up)
OK, so you can work on #1. But don't think too mainstream. Try to find a niche. How to deal with the second and third item?
Do a few searches using phrases that you believe would be used for that particular market. If you're seeing search results with only big corporations in the top listings, you might want to move on to another subject. Not to say it's impossible. I picked a tough one for one of my projects and didn't see much in sales for a couple months. The beginning is often discouraging. So picking a decent topic to start and sticking with it will pay off. If you want to get an idea for some keywords, you can check Wordtrack .com's free keyword search tool. And also try searching (in Google) for "google keyword" and you will be able to try another KW tool.
Also look at your search results. How many results? Here's an SEO tip to analyze potential opportunities; use these to test the water... allinanchor, allintitle, allinurl This relates to optimization levels of some terms.
Take your keyword and plug it in 3 times using the all commands i.e. Search = allinanchor:keyword phrase allintitle:keyword phrase allinurl:keyword phrase
If you've found a market you might want to try, like underwater basket weaving, and have tried checked the competition isn't too heavy (like all fortune 500 on 1st page of results) then try your top 10 keywords phrases as suggested above.
Some of them should have results come back in thousands (great) or tens of thousands (after 20K starts becoming challenging)
There will be competition for just about everything. ancestry, pharmaceuticals, financial products, and anything else. But the thing is being able to identify what is too competitive to make it worth your while down the road.
One last thing. After you've checked the above, have a look at the top competitors using Yahoo Site Explorer. Check the backlinks. Only 100 and something for the guy in the first place? Great! Sometimes the guy in second or third (or top 10 somewhere) only has a dozen inbound links on good phrases you could monetize. Then drop the URL in Google (without ) for a different backlink count. G indexes faster, Yahoo has a better IBL (inbound Link) tool. One last thing - when you start building links, two words for you. Link bait, and social media.
Lots of good info right here on the forum too. Try lookinging for Benjamin's marketing experiment. A lot have found that helpful. That's about it for now. Damn carpo...
