Google just announced a new API for social networks. The new standard will allow developers to create Facebook-like apps on any social network site that implements it with the same calls.

launch partners are hi5, iLike, Slide, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Ning and SixApart (the largest). Check out Techmeme, Techcrunch, and the New York Times for more coverage.

I think they're already there;
gmail, spreadsheets, docs, calculator... even 3d software;

but a lot of their recent acquisitions (not development) have been cell phone related, or advertising
/wiki/List_of_Google_acquisitions

Wonder what they have in store next?
An affordable mobile web for all with wifi for free surfing, supported by ads/ppc?

IMHO the mobile platform is truly key. For developing countries, phones are affordable but laptops/computers/etc. may not be. The mobile market is still fragmented, etc. there is know Google or Microsoft of mobile content.

I believe 5 years from now we will all be doing a lot more mobile marketing. I am reviewing a lot of the possibilites with SMS2website campaigns. Looking to see if if it is more effective than Email2Website campaigns.
